Have you recently suffered injuries because of a crime? The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, also known as CICA, provide compensation to victims of violent crimes that have taken place in Great Britain. They deal with as many as 40,000 cases per year and pay out as much as £200million over that time. Figures given out for successful claims range from £1,000 to £500,000 – the fee you receive depends on the severity of your injuries.

At St Helens Law we work on your behalf to ensure you receive the amount you deserve. We submit many CICA claims in St Helens each year. We work on a Contingency Fee basis. If your claim is not successful there is no fee. If you receive compensation from the authority, we charge a fee of 25% of the amount you are given.

Am I eligible to claim?

There are three main factors that will determine if you are eligible to make a claim for crime compensation in St Helens. They are if you were a direct victim of the crime or not, the location of the incident and if you reported it to the police.

To CICA, a direct victim of a crime is someone who was injured as a result of the crime. Someone who has lost a loved one as a result of the crime is also eligible to make a claim.

Payments can only be given if the crime in question took place in England, Scotland, Wales.

You must have reported the crime to the police if you wish to make a claim. CICA will not pay out for injuries you received during an incident that the police were not told about. You must also have reported it as quickly as can be expected. If there was a delay in notifying the authorities, this could affect your claim and you will be asked to explain why it occurred.

How can I submit my application?

To set things moving all you need to do is to pay us a visit at our office in St Helens town centre. You do not need to make an appointment and the first meeting together will be free of charge. It will take no longer than half an hour. If you cannot make it to our office a phonecall or an email will suffice. We use the first contact with you to gather information about the incident and the injuries you suffered.

Once your case is underway you will be given a username and password for FileView. There you can view any progress or updates regarding your claim. You will be given direct contact details for the solicitor dealing with your case too. We are accredited by the Law Society Lexcel and the Law Society in Conveyancing Quality – you can rest assured your case will be in safe hands.

How long does a claim take?

The majority of cases are resolved within 12 months. However, the more complex a case, the longer it can take to complete so occasionally applications can take longer than a year to be settled. Your claim will take longer to reach a conclusion if you are still receiving treatment or your recovery time is still not clear.

Have you previously been denied the chance to claim for compensation from CICA (Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority)? Following a recent development from the Government, St Helens Law can now work on historical cases whose victims could not previously receive compensation from CICA due to the ‘same roof rule’.

What is the CICA ‘Same Roof Rule’?

The rule meant that victims of a crime committed before 1st October 1979 were not eligible for compensation if, at the time of the crime, they lived in the same household as their attacker.

If you are a previous applicant who were originally denied compensation under the rule you can reapply for CICA compensation in St Helens. You will now be eligible for compensation. If you have also been previously told an application would not be successful because of the rule you can now submit one.

A further review of CICA rules is expected later in the year. The review is expected to be targeted towards better managing the needs of the victims.

Why should you choose St Helens Law?

If you are looking to submit a claim that would previously have been denied, our dedicated team here at St Helens Law are here to help. We will work on any cases were the victim is eligible for a payment from CICA.

We have almost 20 years’ experience working on the behalf of our clients to ensure they receive the level of compensation they deserve. We are Law Society Lexcel Accredited and are members of the Law Society in Conveyancing Quality too.

Who is eligible to submit a claim?

To be eligible you must have been a victim of a violent crime that took place in England, Scotland or Wales. You must also have reported the crime to the police. CICA claims will be considered for the following:

physical or mental injuries caused by a violent crime;

physical or sexual abuse;

loss of earnings because of no or limited capacity to work because of a criminal injury;

death of a loved one caused by a violent crime; including bereavement payments, payments involving financial dependency and parental services and funeral payments.

What do I need to do to claim?

All you have to do is to visit us at our town centre office in St Helens. An appointment is not always necessary, and a first interview of 30 minutes is free of charge. We use this to talk through your case and then we begin the processes towards applying on your behalf. If it is not possible, or not convenient, to visit our office you can get in touch by calling 01744 385171 or via our email info@sthelenslaw.co.uk.

Once your claim is underway you can access all details of your case through FileView. You will be given your own login details and password for the account so you can keep up to date on any progress or changes. You will also receive the direct phone number and email address of the St Helens Law solicitor who is handling your application.

We work on a Contingency Fee basis. This means there are no charges if your claim is unsuccessful. If the claim succeeds, however, we will charge you a fee of 25% of the amount of compensation you receive.

A CICA claim can be submitted if you have been the victim of a violent crime in England, Scotland or Wales. At St Helens Law we submit the claim on your behalf. We call on almost 20 years of experience as a law firm to ensure you receive the compensation you deserve. Compensation is paid by CICA (Criminal Injury Compensation Authority), who are a government agency. But how do you submit your claim?

Visit St Helens Law

To begin your application, you can visit our office in St Helens Town Centre. You will not need to book an appointment so you can simply drop in at your earliest convenience. The first meeting you have with us will take around 30 minutes. There is no charge for your first meeting.

Alternatively, if you cannot make it to our office call us on 01744 385171 or get in touch via info@sthelenslaw.co.uk.

Once your claim is underway we will provide you with access details to your personal FileView account. This allows you to keep up to date with any changes or progress with your case. As well as this we will also give you direct contact details for the dedicated St Helens Law solicitor who will be personally looking after your account.

Who is eligible to submit a claim?

You can receive CICA compensation if you are a blameless victim of violent crime that has taken place in Great Britain. Compensation can also be paid if you have lost a loved one because of violent crime. You must have reported the incident to the police in a timeframe as quickly as is reasonably practicable. If the incident was not reported to the police you cannot make a claim.

Every eligible claim will be paid by CICA. Normally a case can take up to a year to conclude and for the compensation to be paid. Complex applications can take even longer to complete. It will take longer for you to receive your compensation because of the following:

If you are still receiving medical treatment

If how long it will take for you to recover, or your level of recovery, is unknown

Interim payments can sometimes be made if your personal circumstances mean there is a delay in you receiving your compensation. If you have multiple injuries, you will only receive payment for your three most severe injuries. This is determined by the authority’s tariff of injuries. The total amount you receive will be a figure between £1,000 and £500,000 and you will receive the following:

100% of the value of your most severe injury

30% of the value of your second most severe injury and 15% for a third injury

Contact St Helens

At St Helens Law we are a Law Society Lexcel and the Law Society in Conveyancing Quality accredited firm who submit CICA claims on your behalf. A claim to the Criminal Injury Compensation Authority (CICA) can be put forward if you have suffered mental or physical injuries because of a violent crime. We call on more than 20 years’ experience to submit the best possible case for you, that gives you the best chance of receiving the figure you deserve. But how long will your claim take?

All eligible claims will be paid by CICA, who are a government agency. Most cases can take up to 12 months to complete with the more complex applications taking even longer to reach a conclusion. Factors which can lengthen the time to receive your compensation are as follows:

If any medical treatment you receive as a result of the injuries you suffered is still ongoing

If your level of recovery, or recovery time, is unknown

If a settlement has to be delayed CICA may offer an interim payment.

How much CICA compensation will I receive?

The amount of compensation you will receive is determined by the authority’s tariff of injuries. This details the severity and number of injuries you suffered. CICA will pay compensation for up to three injuries totalling a figure of between £1,000 and £500,000. If you have more than one injury that each would qualify for a claim, you will receive the following:

100% of the full value of the most serious injury

30% of the full value of the second most valuable injury and then 15% for a third injury

Here at St Helens Law, we work on a Contingency Fee basis. If your claim is unsuccessful you will be charged no fee. If it is accepted and you receive compensation, we will charge at a rate of 25% of the figure you receive.

Am I eligible to claim?

So long as the crime you were a victim of took place in England, Scotland or Wales and it was reported to the police you will be able to claim. Your application must also be submitted within two years of the crime being reported to the police.

To submit a claim with St Helens Law all you need to do to get things underway is to visit our town centre office. Your first meeting takes roughly half an hour and is free of charge. A booking is not necessary. If coming to our office is not possible you can call us on 01744 385171 or via email.

To make sure you can keep up to date with your case’s progress you will be given login details for your own FileView account. This is where all the information regarding your application is stored. You will also be given the direct contact number and e-mail address of the St Helens Law solicitor who is looking after your claim.

If you require any further information do not hesitate to contact us.
What injuries can I claim compensation for through CICA?

Applications through CICA will be considered if you have been a victim of or received injuries due to the following:

Physical or sexual abuse

Loss of earnings because of your injuries

A fatality caused by violent crime, which is inclusive of:

Bereavement payments

Payments for loss of parental services

Financial dependency

Funeral payments

What fee can you expect to receive?

The fee you receive depends on the level and amount of injuries you receive. This is determined by the authority’s tariff of injuries. If you have more than one injury that on their own would qualify for a claim, you could be entitled to:

100% of the full tariff value of the most serious injury and then;

30% of the amount for the second most valuable injury and a further 15% for a third injury.

CICA will pay compensation for a maximum of three injuries.

St Helens Law do not charge a fee for unsuccessful claims. However, if it is successful, we charge a Contingency Fee of 25% of the figure you are awarded.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) is an executive agency of the government. They award compensation to people who have been physically or mentally injured as a result of a violent crime in England, Scotland or Wales.
Am I eligible to make a CICA claim?

As well as mental or physical injuries, CICA compensation claims are considered if you have suffered the following:

What are the eligibility rules for a CICA claim?

To be eligible you must be a direct victim of the crime that took place in Great Britain, therefore compensation will only be passed to the claimant if the incident their claim refers to occurred in England, Scotland, Wales.
